One of our local cooperating farmers has harvested the UF/IFAS On-farm Cotton Variety Trial. This plot has been put in by the Fulford Farm in Monticello, FL for the past two years. The yield data are not calculated completely, but the Fulford’s said the field is averaging at 2.1 bales per acre and “back of the envelope” calculations look like some of the varieties yielded 1200 pounds per acre or more. Although the year was challenging with frequent, heavy rainfall, a good harvest can make you forget a lot of troubles encountered along the way.
I shared a picture from this farm at planting time in a previous blog and its always nice to follow up on how things turned out.
We will not have the final yield results and gin turnout data for awhile. However, I made a brief video from photos by my colleauge, Mr. Joel Love of FDACS, taken at this farm throughout the season. This was a high biomass rye farm where the Fulford’s are implementing on a zero tolerance program for herbicide resistant Palmer Amaranth pigweeds.
