A Good Year For Nematodes

I have had nematodes on my mind throughout our cropping season. Seems that sometimes we forget those pesky roundworms can ruin an otherwise good year. A colleague at University of Georgia, Rome Etheridge, recently shared a post on  Seminole Crops E-News about both cotton and peanuts with nematode problems. Perhaps I haven’t looked closely enough at the …

Rapid Response to Emerging Agricultural Threats-White Sugarcane Aphid

I am proud to announce the US Environmental Protection Agency has approved a Section 18 Exemption for the use of Transform WG Insecticide for control of White Sugarcane Aphid (WSA) in forage sorghum grown in Florida.  This exemption is valid until 12/31/14 and allows rescue treatments for late planted sorghum.  We have unfortunately been seeing area …

When it Rains It Pours

When it rains it pours, and when it doesn’t……well it just gets really dry. Following a less than pleasant summer growing season, mother nature continues to add insult to injury. September is prime time for peanut harvest in North Florida, and some farmers are saying we are doing a better job of peanut “planting.” They say …

2014 Peanuts: The Crop and Market

My phone often rings with questions about the peanut market. The market conditions are not as clear as the Chicago Board of Trade where farmers can pull up current prices 24 hours a day. They often think I may have some “inside track” of information they are not exposed to. Most farmers know little more than what they see on their farm. However, …

2014: The Weather

Dr. David Zierden, the Florida State Climatologist and I have been discussing the 2014 weather for the Southeast. I suggested the similarities in crop conditions between 2011 and 2014, and we have looked at the rainfall totals for the 90 day June-July-August period. In 2011 we had a dry spring capped off with May being very …

Sugarcane Aphid Update

Sorry for the brief post from the field. We are finding populations everywhere we’ve looked. Here are updated recommendations from Dr. David Buntin, UGA Extension Entomologist. These are applicable for Florida growers as well. It is my understanding grain and forage sorghums are hosts. Sorghum-Sudan and millet are non-hosts. NEW APHID PEST found in GA …

ALERT: Sugarcane Aphid in Sorghum

I have been learning more about aphid entomology than I bargained for this week. This spring and summer I have read about challenges with Sugarcane aphids in the Mid South, Deep South, and Texas. I have been thinking we were fortunate not to deal with the pest. However, this week we have tentatively identified the aphids …

“Showing a lot of Stress”

I share this quote that one of our North Florida farmers made this week. “Peanuts at Wadsworth haven’t had rain since around July 15, about 4 weeks, starting to see signs of needing water.  Lafitte is not doing well at all, showing a lot of stress.” Moisture stress has been the name of the game …

Corn Yields are In (Video)

I have summarized the corn yields from the Columbia County Grain Corn Trials hosted by 83 Farms, LLC at a farm in Ellisville,  FL. This local information helps our farmers, Extension, seed dealers, and seed industry to make better management decisions including hybrid selection, and responses of hybrids to particular field conditions and management practices. …
